Does My Child Need Early Orthodontic Treatment?
Did you know that an orthodontic evaluation should occur long before your child’s teenage years? At Happy Harbor Pediatric Dentistry, our board-certified pediatric dentist, Dr. Collin Burns, offers early orthodontic evaluation to ensure your little one’s growth and development stay on track. Early orthodontics, also known as interceptive orthodontics, can help reduce the need for more complex orthodontic treatments down the road.
How Soon Should You Schedule Your Child’s First Orthodontic Screening?
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends scheduling the first orthodontic screening by age seven. At this point, most children have enough permanent teeth for our pediatric dentist to assess how the adult teeth are developing behind the scenes and identify any potential problems before they become bigger concerns.
The good news? Your little one’s jawbone is still growing and highly malleable and responsive to treatment at this early age, which is why interceptive treatments are highly effective. Early care helps guide healthy development, laying the foundation for better future alignment.
What Is Interceptive Orthodontics?
Interceptive orthodontics, sometimes called phase I orthodontics or early orthodontic treatment, occurs while a child still has a mix of baby and permanent teeth. The goal of this early intervention is not to achieve a perfectly straight smile just yet, but rather to diagnose and address developing structural issues, such as severe overcrowding, crossbites, or narrow arches, before they become more complex and difficult to treat in the future.
By gently guiding the growth of the jawbone and creating enough room for the incoming adult teeth, early treatment can, in many cases, prevent the need for invasive procedures like tooth extractions or jaw surgery later in life. While not every child will need interceptive orthodontics, those who do can benefit greatly from this proactive approach to their care.
What Are the Signs Your Child Needs Early Orthodontic Treatment?
Here are some signs that may indicate your child could benefit from early orthodontic care:
- Teeth that look noticeably crowded or crooked
- Difficulty chewing or biting
- Mouth breathing, snoring, or restless sleep
- Thumb-sucking or prolonged pacifier use past age three
- Baby teeth that were lost too early or held on too long
- Upper and lower teeth that don’t come together properly
- A jaw that shifts to one side when your child bites down
- Speech difficulties that seem connected to how your little one’s teeth fit together
What Treatments Does Interceptive Orthodontics Include?
Your child’s early orthodontic treatments may include one or a combination of the following:
- Space Maintainer: If your child loses a baby tooth prematurely, Dr. Burns may recommend a space maintainer to preserve the space the adult tooth needs to emerge in the proper position.
- Palatal Expander: A palatal expander helps widen the palate or roof of the mouth, helping address overcrowding, crossbites, and even mouth breathing in some cases.
- Partial Braces or Other Appliances: Partial braces or orthodontic appliances, such as a Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) or Quad Helix, can guide proper jaw growth and development and improve the alignment of your child’s bite.
At Happy Harbor Pediatric Dentistry, we also offer ectopic eruption correction, which guides teeth that emerge in the wrong place or at the wrong angle into proper alignment while helping prevent crowding or damage to nearby teeth. We may also need to create space for your little one’s adult teeth to come in their ideal positions.
Will Your Child Need Braces After Early Orthodontic Treatment?
Even with early orthodontic treatment, your child may still need Phase II orthodontic care. This second phase usually begins in the early teen years, once most or all of the adult teeth are in place, and often involves braces or other orthodontic appliances. However, these future treatments are typically quicker, more effective, and less costly.
Dr. Burns will continue to monitor your child’s growth between phases to make sure everything stays on track.
