When Should You Seek Emergency Dental Care?
A dental emergency is a situation requiring immediate care to relieve pain, save a damaged tooth whenever possible, treat an infection, or address a soft tissue injury. The following are some of the most common dental emergencies we see at our Rockwall practice:
A Knocked-Out (Avulsed) Tooth
If your child knocks out a permanent tooth, pick it up by the crown, gently rinse it with clean water without touching the root, and gently reinsert it into its socket. If that's not possible, keep it moist in some milk and bring it to your child's emergency appointment. We will do everything we can to reimplant the tooth. Note: If your child knocks out a baby tooth, we do not recommend reimplantation to prevent infection or damage to the developing adult tooth.
A Displaced (Luxated) Tooth
If a tooth is dislodged or moved out of place due to trauma or injury, bite down gently on clean gauze to keep it in place. We may recommend splinting to save the affected tooth.
A Chipped, Broken, or Otherwise Damaged Tooth
Rinse with warm water to clean the affected area and place any broken pieces of the tooth in some milk, and bring them with you to your child's emergency appointment. Depending on the extent of the damage, we may restore the tooth with a filling, a crown, or other restorative treatment. If, however, the damage is beyond repair, we may recommend an emergency tooth extraction to prevent complications.
Severe Tooth Pain
While intense tooth pain is usually caused by deep decay, trauma, or infection, it can sometimes result from something trapped between your child's teeth. The first step is to gently floss around the painful area. If the pain persists, contact our office to schedule an emergency appointment to relieve your child's pain and prevent complications. Meanwhile, use cold compresses and offer over-the-counter pain relief medication approved by your child's pediatrician to help minimize swelling and discomfort.
Facial Swelling
Facial swelling is usually the result of a severe infection, which can pose a serious risk to your child's overall health. Use cold compresses to relieve swelling or discomfort and call our Rockwall practice for immediate care. If the swelling is severe, head to the nearest emergency room.
Lost Filling or Crown
This type of emergency can typically wait until the next day. Contact us to schedule the next available appointment for your child.
Soft Tissue Injury
Apply gentle but constant pressure to stop any bleeding. If the bleeding is severe and cannot be controlled, head to your nearest emergency room.
Disclaimer: The above are general guidelines and are not a substitute for care by a dental professional. Please contact our office for personalized instructions specific to your child's unique needs.
Did you know that more than 5 million teeth are knocked out each year in the U.S.? Many of these accidents happen during sports activities, which is why wearing a protective mouthguard is one of the best ways to safeguard your child's smile!
