Pediatric Nerve Treatment

Rockwall, Texas

Extensive decay, a tooth chip, or trauma can provide an entryway into a tooth's inner pulp, leading to inflammation or infection. Our board-certified pediatric dentist and experienced team at Happy Harbor Pediatric Dentistry may recommend nerve treatment to save the damaged tooth, promoting your child's long-term oral health. Our gentle techniques and calming environment will ensure your child has the best possible patient experience.

Why Save a Baby Tooth?

Even though the baby teeth are temporary, they play an important role in your child’s future oral and overall health. These tiny chompers act as placeholders for the adult teeth developing behind the scenes and support chewing, speech development, and proper jaw growth.

Baby tooth pulp damage, left untreated, can cause serious complications. The infection can spread, leading to pain, swelling, and even damage to the developing adult teeth. Premature tooth loss can lead to the neighboring teeth shifting toward the gap, interfering with the space the adult tooth needs to come in and impacting a child's future teeth and bite alignment.

What Is a Tooth Nerve Treatment?

Every tooth has two main parts: the visible portion called the crown, and the part hidden below the gums called the root. Inside each tooth is an area that extends from the crown to the root called the tooth pulp, which contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. A baby tooth nerve treatment is a procedure that treats the tooth's inner pulp, preserving it and keeping it in place until it is ready to fall out naturally.

Depending on the extent of the tooth pulp damage, Dr. Burns may recommend one of the following nerve treatments:

Pulpotomy

We recommend a pulpotomy when the infection is limited to the crown of the tooth. The procedure involves removing the damaged pulp tissues and placing a special medication to protect the remaining healthy pulp. After treatment, we will seal the tooth and restore it with a pediatric crown, keeping it strong and functional.

Pulpectomy

If the damage has affected the entire pulp, including the tooth roots, we may recommend a pulpectomy. The procedure involves removing the affected pulp tissues, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, and placing an inert material that remains until the tooth naturally falls out. The last step is placing a pediatric dental crown for protection.

Direct or Indirect Pulp Capping

For less severe decay, we may recommend an indirect or direct pulp cap to help the tooth heal naturally. An indirect pulp cap is used when deep decay is very close to the nerve but has not yet reached it. It involves placing a thin layer of a special material that helps the tooth repair itself. A direct pulp cap, on the other hand, is for when the nerve is slightly exposed, but still healthy. It involves placing a protective medication directly onto the exposed area to promote healing. Both procedures aim to protect the pulp, prevent further decay, and allow the tooth to heal naturally.

Cvek Technique

A Cvek pulpotomy is a conservative treatment we use for teeth that have been traumatically injured, particularly in young patients whose teeth are still developing. During the procedure, we gently remove only the injured portion of the nerve and place a medicated dressing over the healthy tissue that remains. This encourages healing, helps preserve the tooth's vitality, and allows it to continue its natural growth and development.

Did you know that a tooth's inner pulp is often called its "heart"? That's because it's a vital center full of tiny nerves and blood vessels that keep the tooth alive and healthy, and that's exactly what we work to protect during nerve treatment!

What Are the Benefits of a Pediatric Tooth Nerve Treatment?

A pediatric tooth nerve treatment removes the infection from the body, preventing it from spreading. It also relieves your child's pain, allowing for comfortable chewing and eating and promoting healthy speech development. Protecting the affected tooth helps save the space the adult teeth need to come in, ensuring their proper positioning. Pediatric tooth nerve treatments not only alleviate discomfort and protect your child's dental health, but they also help establish a foundation for a lifetime of strong, healthy smiles.
