What Is a Baby Root Canal?

Inside every tooth is a small area known as the pulp that contains nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue. Deep decay, tooth chips or cracks, damaged dental restorations, or even trauma can lead to tooth pulp inflammation or infection, requiring a nerve treatment to restore your child’s healthy smile.

Depending on the extent of tooth pulp damage, Dr. Burns may recommend one of the following pediatric nerve treatments:

Pulpotomy: A pulpotomy treats a tooth with damage limited to the crown. Dr. Burns will remove the diseased pulp while leaving the healthy tissues intact. He will clean and disinfect the area, place a medication that protects the healthy pulp, and seal the space. Dr. Burns typically places a dental crown after treatment to protect the tooth and prevent further damage.

Pulpectomy: A pulpectomy treats a baby tooth with damage affecting both the inner pulp and the roots. Dr. Burns will remove the affected pulp, clean the root canals, and place an inert material that’s naturally absorbed as the permanent tooth prepares to erupt. A dental crown will protect the tooth after treatment and prevent further damage.

Direct or Indirect Pulp Capping: For less severe decay, a direct or indirect pulp cap can help protect the tooth’s nerve and promote natural healing.

• Indirect Pulp Cap: Dr. Burns may recommend an indirect pulp cap if the decay is close to the nerve but hasn’t quite reached it. He will apply a protective material over the area to stimulate natural repair.
• Direct Pulp Cap: This procedure may be recommended if the nerve is slightly exposed but still healthy. Dr. Burns will place a therapeutic medication directly on the exposed tissue to promote healing and seal out infection.

Cvek Technique: This partial pulpotomy procedure is ideal for developing permanent teeth with inner pulp damage resulting from traumatic injury. Dr. Burns will remove only the injured portion of the nerve and place a medicated dressing over the remaining healthy tissue to preserve the tooth’s vitality and allow it to continue to develop naturally.
